Socials Update

Both Christine and I have enjoyed being involved as the ‘social committee’ albeit being totally naive regarding the time involvement in organising the various social events.

We have had several offers of help on an ‘ad hoc’ basis which has been much appreciated and we will certainly be using those offers during the year!

We started with the Chinese / Thai evening which was a great success. We had a few scary moments on the 11th hour trying to accommodate everybody, and finally managed to seat 111 members and their guests – MARVELLOUS!! Well done to Brian and his team and to Mo and her bar ‘belles’.

We then donned our ‘silks’ and had a great time with the ‘Race Night’ which everyone appeared to enjoy, judging by the amount you spent! Our thanks to the bookies on the evening – Les Price and his co-workers who worked tirelessly through the evening – mind you it did cost me a few bob in ale!

After a fairly slow start in ticket sales for Mr Captains BBQ, we eventually seated 113 people in the marquee, and were treated to a terrific live act called Fabbalicious – we have had so much positive feedback for the girls that we are likely to ask them back for a future event. Thanks to the DJ’s Dave and Ian who managed to keep us dancing into the early hours.

Unfortunately the weather turned colder and breezier during the day which resulted in the marquee being a touch on the cool side for those who were close to the BBQ area – we apologise for this and perhaps next year we ought to consider some means of heating if necessary.

Both Christine and I have also received a number of comments from various attendees with regard to the food – some were disappointed that their food was cold and some commented on the fact there was too much! We will sit down with Brian and discuss future BBQ’s with a view to reaching a sensible compromise with say a good quality steak and a sausage and dispense with the volume and variety.

We have in the main had numerous positive comments about the overall success of the event and may we just take this opportunity of expressing our thanks to all those sponsors who donated the raffle prizes and also well done to those who were successful. We managed to raise a fantastic £700 for Mr Captain’s nominated charity, Medequip 4 Kids.

We now have a couple of months to recuperate before our next event on Bank Holiday Monday 25th August – which is Family Fun Day. We definitely need a number of helpers for this special day to run the various activities for both kids and adults. Please don’t hesitate to approach Christine or myself if you feel you can help.
